ZAH awarded one of the FRONTIER innovative grants

The Zentrum für Astronomie (ZAH) was successful in acquiring a FRONTIER grant of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität supporting exceptionally innovative projects. Dr. Robi Banerjee (ITA), Prof. Ralf Klessen (ITA), and Prof. Rainer Spurzem (ARI) together with Prof. Reinhard Männer from the Zentrales Institut für Technische Informatik (ZITI) are planning to build a medium-sized computing cluster based on Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). Thanks to the GPU hardware accelerators, the new cluster will provide local resources for astrophysical high-performance computing at a fraction of the cost of standard PC clusters. Present day research in astrophysics relies heavily on large scale numerical simulations. The research groups at ITA and ARI are using high-performance computing as primary research tool in the field of star formation and stellar dynamics. They expect an enormous performance gain from the new GPU technology. The FRONTIER innovative grant amounts to 150,000 EUR. (29.04.2008)
