Since 1 January 2005 the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut (ARI) at Heidelberg - together with the Landessternwarte Königstuhl (LSW) and the Institut für Theoretische Astrophysik (ITA) - is part of the newly founded Zentrum für Astronomie (ZAH) of Heidelberg University.
Recent News:
26th February 2007:
The verification of the ring-solution for Gaia developed by ARI is
Picture of the week at the Gaia-Homepage.
30th January 2007:
Open position: Scientific Managing Director at ZAH;
applications latest on 28th February 2007 (in German)".
30th November 2006:
Prof. Dr. Eva Grebel will start on the
new professorship of ARI at ZAH on 1st April 2007.
The astrometry group
at the ARI is heavily involved in the preparation of the ESA cornerstone mission
Gaia, to be launched in 2011. In the
recent past the ARI participated in the data analysis of ESA's
HIPPARCOS
satellite (1984-1997) and produced various ground-based astrometric compilations.
The
stellar dynamics group at the ARI performs numerical and analytical
investigations of
planet formation, evolution of star clusters, structure of the Milky Way,
dynamics of density waves, and merging of galaxies.
At the ARI
the newly founded
gravitational lensing group investigates cosmological questions like
the frequency of multiply imaged quasars and giant arcs, as well as
aspects of microlensing, including searches for extrasolar planets.
The ARI compiles, produces and updates a number of
astronomical catalogues, like the series of Fundamental catalogues
FK1 - FK6,
the database of the Apparent Places of the Fundamental Stars (ARIAPFS),
or the database of the Nearby Stars (ARICNS).
Additionally there is a number of
other research topics on special types of objects like late type
galaxies, open star clusters, White Dwarfs, halo stars, and work on the calendar.
