Java developer position at ARI/ZAH, Heidelberg University

ARI/ZAH has a vacancy for a Java software developer till the end of 2013. The position starts in early/mid 2012; the precise date can be negotiated. The successful applicant will work on the preparation of the scientific data processing for the Gaia astronomy mission of the European Space Agency ESA, due for launch in 2013. Gaia will undertake an astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way. The Gaia group at ARI/ZAH leads the 100-person international subconsortium responsible for the ``core processing'', i.e. the parts of the data reductions going from the raw satellite telemetry data all the way to the final positions, motions and distances of one billion stars. It also leads the Project Office of the entire 500-person Gaia consortium.

The applicant should have extensive experience in Java or C++ software development and the Eclipse development tool, and be able to work in a closely cooperating international team. Very good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is essential. A general understanding of scientific terminology is highly desirable, and some knowledge of astronomy would be beneficial.

Payment for the vacant position will be according to the German civil servant scale (Die Vergütung erfolgt nach TV-L); details depend on the experience and on the level of professional education of the applicant. Am ARI/ZAH ist die Stelle eines/einer Java-Software-Entwicklers/in bis Ende 2013 zu besetzen. Die Stelle soll Anfang/Mitte 2012 angetreten werden; der genaue Termin ist verhandelbar. Der/die erfolgreiche Bewerber/in wird an der Vorbereitung der Datenauswerung für die Astrometrie-Mission "Gaia" der Europäischen Raumfahrtorganisation ESA mitarbeiten, die in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2013 starten soll. Gaia wird eine astrometrische, photometrische und spektroskopische Durchmusterung der Milchstraße durchführen. Die Gaia-Gruppe am ARI/ZAH leitet das rund hundertköpfige internationale Unterkonsortium, das für das sog. core processing zuständig ist. Es umfasst diejenigen Teile der Datenverarbeitung, die von den rohen Telemetrie-Daten zu den endgültigen Positionen, Bewegungen und Entfernungen für eine Milliarde Sterne führen. Die Gruppe leitet außerdem das Project Office des 500-köpfigen Gesamtkonsortiums.

Bewerber müssen die Entwicklung von Software in Java oder C++ in einem eng kooperierenden internationalen Team beherrschen. Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse (in Wort und Schrift) sind unverzichtbar. Ein allgemeines Verständnis von wissenschaftlicher Terminologie ist sehr wünschenswert, und gewisse Astronomie-Kenntnisse wären vorteilhaft.
