The ARIBIB gives some of the bibliographical information in the 'index format' only. This index format contains basically the author(s) or editor(s) [in alphabetic order], a year [the year of publication is either this given year or a slightly earlier year], keywords, and the AJB page number. Not included are: title of the paper or title of the book, bibliographic data for the source of the paper or bibliographic data for the book, abstract (summary) of the paper.
The index format provides therefore essentially an on-line version of the author index of the 'Astronomischer Jahresbericht (AJB)', giving you the AJB volume and page number. In order to obtain the title and the source of a paper found in the ARIBIB in the index format, you have at present to consult the corresponding printed volume of 'Astronomischer Jahresbericht (AJB)'. If the 'image format' is available for this entry, the ARIBIB gives you a direct link to the image of the corresponding page in our database ARIPRINT.
Why do we not give the more complete reference format for these items ? The answer is simple: At present, only the author index are available to us in a machine-readable version for the volumes of the AJB. The titles and the sources of the papers are not. We think it is better to give in the ARIBIB at least the available index information than nothing at all about these papers. The missing fields (correct sequence of authors, title, source, exact year) will be filled when we shall process these older volumes of AJB.
For the literature before 1969, we are using usually the chapter titles of the bibliography as substitutes for individual keywords. The same is true for some of the older AAA entries for which AAA has not provided individual keywords.
For papers in the ARIBIB based on the 'Astronomischer Jahresbericht (AJB)', i.e. for 1899 - 1968, the index format gives for technical reasons only the page number of the AJB (but not the AJB reference number). This has various implications: (a) There may be more than one paper of this author given on the corresponding AJB page; (b) Co-authors of a paper can only be identified on the AJB page; (c) Multi-authored papers have more than one entry in the ARIBIB (namely one per co-author).
